In all my bedroom decorating endeavors, I've never been overly impressed with black girls bedding sets. Solid black comforters and bedspreads just seemed to clash with (most, but we won't talk about the goth girls) my clients' teen and tween girls sunny, cheerful personalities. Black faux fur and microsuede bedding sets have a tendency to overpower even the brightest accent colors and decorations and absorb all of the natural as well as the artificial lighting the girls' rooms.

But I may have found a black girls bedding set that will satisfy a young girl's need for dark colored bedding. Granted, this set of Tommy Hilfiger girls bedding is not solid black but it does have a black background which should count for something. The tropical print fabric removes or at the very least offsets the dark color and makes for a very exotic bedding set. In fact, the dark black really makes those tropical flowers, leaves and pineapples stand out. After seeing so many pictures of bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and every other room in the home covered in pineapples from back in the 1980s, I never dreamed I would recommend a pineapple print fabric. But I have learned that when decorating it's best never to say never!

In my opinion giraffe is one of the more unique wild animal prints and I wonder why it's not used more in teen girl's bedrooms. I was looking for some tween safari theme decorating ideas and came across the usual cheetah, zebra and leopard print bedding sets and BOOM I chanced upon some luxurious chocolate brown and gold giraffe bedding. My first thoughts were to wonder why on earth I had not designed a room covered in giraffe patterns before. The only answer that I could come up with is that I might have regarded the earth tones found in a giraffe skin to be a little too dark or mature for a tween's or teen girl's bedroom much less a baby's giraffe nursery theme.

I still might not advise using these earthy tones for a preteen, but older girls are demanding more and more sophisticated bedding for their daybeds in their dorm rooms as well as their beds at home. If you don't want to drown the room in a sea of giraffe opt for a sumptuous golden or brown dupioni silk for bedspread. I usually lean towards platform beds for teens bedrooms because of the drawers underneath the mattress that offers storage. As well all know, teen girls have lots of stuff that needs to be packed somewhere and closet organization is usually not their strong point.

Plain wooden platform beds work just fine so long as the construction is solid. They are so easy to build that your teen could put it together with the help of a couple of her girlfriends on site in the dorm room or at home. The simple instructions for how to make a platform bed frame are included with the kit and are pretty self explanatory.

This platform bed doesn't have a drawer, but the contemporary design is just too cool to look over in your search for the perfect match for your teen's modern bedding set. Tuck in a solid cover (black maybe?) comforter, quilt or duvet cover under the mattress to let the metallic platform bed frame shine. Add some satin or velvet pillows and pillow shams and a flokati or faux fur area rug for the girls to lounge on and chat and you've got a modern platform bed with a cool look for a very cheap price!

While I mentioned a solid color black or dark color bedspread, that's just if you happen to have one on hand and are trying to decorate your teen's bedroom or dorm room with items you picked up for an inexpensive or discounted price, you are not limited to solid colors! Funky teen bedding with geometric designs, bold stripes or even fun bedding with large polka dots could all work with this particular metallic platform bed. I like the black and white bedding and comforters for teen girls bedrooms or maybe something in dark gray family because of the brushed silver metal on the bed frame. Royal purple would look fabulous in the room with the gray metal of the bed. In fact, something deep purple might be the best color to use! I'll see if I can locate some for you!

If there's one thing that I keep going back to when designing teen girl's bedrooms it's the sumptious look of moroccan decor. The vivid colors, beads and sheer fabrics bring loads of funky teen girl bedroom decorating ideas to mind! The cool thing about the multi-colored decorations are that they are cheap! Carved wooden headboards full of hand carved mysteries imported from far away locations like Zanzibar and Mozambique are very inexpensive.

The color of the fabric draped over the tall headboard with the canopy rails attached is a color I can only define as electric lavender. The shade is not deep and dark enough to be called grape or purple but much to exciting and "in your face" to be called lavender. Note how colors from the intricately patterned coverlet have been both repeated in the neckroll pillows and accented with the coral pink, lipstick pink and electric lavender pillow. The mint green silk pillow and the blue background of the bedspread provide the cool colors to balance the hot pinks and corals.

If lots of color doesn't fit your decorating ideas for tweens and teens, harem style decor is not for you! I would encourage you to give it a try before you discount the reaction of your teenager and her friends when they see a bedroom completely decorated in this style.
