The summer has flown by with days at the beach a memory, how to choose college dorm bedding is what's on most teen girls' minds these days. With the exodus for college in full swing, for the next few weeks I’ll be up to my eye teeth in dorm room decorating projects.


Actually, after thinking about it just a minute I realize that I've been taking little else in the way of calls requesting decorating consultation since mid-summer and longer. You might be amazed to learn that some girls start bouncing around ideas for decorating dorm rooms right after they returned from spring break vacation. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at their enthusiasm since this is a teen girl’s first bedroom in her life as an adult and having the perfect set of girls college dorm bedding is very, very important.

As excited as the girls are about getting their rooms decorated, after spending several weeks shopping online and browsing in stores for looking for twin bedding, extra long (xl) twin sheet sets, pillows, and room accessories, I have a tip to share with you that will save you some time AND money thus the title of this post, How to choose college dorm bedding...get it?

Before you rush out to buy your dorm bedding and stuff you should consult with your roommate to see what color and style her comforter set is. It would be a raging disaster if you bought bedding that clashes like crazy with hers. Find out what color your roommate's things are and do your very best to be accommodating if she has already jumped the gun and made her purchase. MAYBE, just maybe you will get lucky and learn that she was waiting to find out what color your bedding set might be and you will get to pick first!

LIME GREEN and TURQUOISE BLUE BEDDING

I was in search of decorations for a tropical bedroom when this lime green and turquoise bedding set nearly made me drop my purse. It had all of the colors of the Lilly Pulitzer Via Roma collection (minus the palm trees) that I had planned to use plus some hot pink and orange that pulled me in.

It so appealing that pushed the mental picture I had formed of this project's ultimate design right out the window. But the broader range of colors, neither the modern look nor the cheap price of the bed in a bag was what prompted the swarm of decorating ideas that had this comforter set as the centerpiece churning in my mind; it was that mod, lime green headboard.

The pictures of the headboard shown with the cute, lime green and turquoise blue bedding set could be improved. I couldn’t help but think that if the wood used was thicker or if two layers of pressed board where used to make the openings more boxy then you would have both display and storage capabilities. Actually, it would probably be the most modern, bookcase headboard around and think of how plain, black books would stand out against the bright lime green paint.

If your "do it yourself" carpentry skills (like mine) fall short of making your own headboard for your teenage girl’s bedroom; I got a few ideas for getting done without risking losing a finger on a saw, on this page. I’m not too crazy about the skinny slatted headboard. I’m not even sure that painting it neon green to match the lime green and turquoise blue bedding set would save this design. Instead, I thought that it might be a good idea to pick up some wall shelves in different sizes, scuff them up, paint them lime green and hang them over the bed to use as a headboard. The lady I’m working for right now already has a headboard she’s using and she might reject anything I come up with besides a set of Lilly Pulitzer bedding but I just wanted to run that idea by my reader so they could give me some feedback before I give it a try. The surf’s up and the ocean temps are rising. Requests for aqua bedding sets and aqua bedroom ideas start rolling in almost as predictably and reliably as the ebb and flow of the endless tide. This seasonal color trend in teenage girls’ bedroom decor has yet to miss a year for as long as I’ve been involved in bedroom design.

Even when I lived way up north where summer was so late to arrive that the mention of swimming never occurred to me until late June, teens came back from spring break with the intention of bringing their tropical vacation home with them. You could count on these well traveled young girls having ideas of decorating their bedrooms based on decorations that were used in their rented beach cabana and the many shades of blue they saw reflected in the sea. Aqua blue bedding is always a big hit in one style or another.


PATTERNS and PRINTS

Stripes and polka dots have been very popular with this age group but there have been more than a few beach bunnies lately that have chosen blue floral bedding over navy, teal and aqua bedding in plaids, stripes or polka dots. When I say floral, this is not your grandmother’s floral print. These tropical prints are as far from granny’s flowers as a palm leaf is from old fashioned ivy. Splashes and layers of ice blue aqua graphics grounded by teal green and navy are as fresh and bracing as salt spray no matter how many miles you happen to be from the nearest beach or your favorite island.

SHEETS

If your teenage girl likes to mix it up, even with tropical print aqua blue bedding sets, there is still room for a few dots or stripes. Black and white polka dot sheets might be the perfect background for the wild aqua blue bedding set even if the comforter is covered in bright green hibiscus flowers.

THE WALLS

An aqua bedroom is a natural choice for a beach cottage look. If the idea of being surrounded by four aqua walls is unappealing, consider painting three walls white and paint an accent wall a shade of aqua that matches your aqua bedding set.

Chocolate Brown and Aqua Blue Comforter Sets, Window Valances and Bedding Accessories

Chocolate and aqua window treatments and bedding sets would have been out of the question earlier in your teenage girl's years. While the modern decorating and color scheme rules have been relaxed by miles, dark browns and shades of blue in the not so distant past were classic ways to decorate a boy's bedroom (read: territory).

The door has opened for the sophisticated teen girl to enjoy this cute color combination. The only question is whether she would prefer her chocolate brown and aqua teenage bed in a bag comforter sets and decorative bedding accessories to have a fabric design of circles, squares or forego the geometric patterns completely in favor of solid colors or crisp, even stripes.

Overweight the bedroom design with cool shades of aqua or deep, dark brown colors depending on the natural lighting of the girl's bedroom. For instance, if there is a northern exposure, valances would be my choice of window treatment over full length curtains or draperies to make the most use of sunlight. Another decorating tip for a poorly lit room would be to use light colored (flokati or funky shag?) area rugs or floor coverings rather than dark rugs that would soak up all the light.
