My client's daughter has insisted that I find some girls horse bedding sets for her to pick from for an upcoming bedroom makeover. Having decorated more than a few cowgirl bedrooms in the past few years alone, I am no stranger to the fact that many girls have an affection for barrel racing and rodeos and must confess to enjoying a day watching riding competitions and races myself from time to time.

Getting back to the issue of finding teenage girls horse bedding sets and comforters, the problem that I am facing is finding fabrics that include horsey stuff with color. I need a comforter set that will appeal to the decorative taste of a teenage girl. Meaning, this young lady (pre-teen or tween) was too old for rocking horse or carousel horse bedding but did not want a bedroom decorated in a style that was too masculine with nothing but tans and browns in the color scheme. And unfortunately wild horses don't come in a very broad range of colors.

So far, I've collected pictures of comforter with a stampede of rust color horses on a field of black and silver and a less lively set that has a light blue sky over a herd of paints that is a bed in a bag set. The first set that I mentioned could be the inspiration piece for a very sophisticated bedroom design where the second set is more of a traditional western girls horse bedding set.

I feel that I need one more set before I can make a presentation and work up my design board so today will be spent searching through the mall, catalogs and online. Keep your fingers crossed that I find something really cool today because I don't believe that the girls horse bedding sets that I've found so far are what we need. I’m no cowgirl and hardly know one end of a cow from the other but cow print bedding intrigues me. For one thing, I like the black and white print fabric that reminds of the boxes those computers that used to be delivered to your door were packed in for shipping. The other thing is I like country bedroom themes and cows can be part of that in a completely non-western kind of way.

When a teenage girl recently told me that she wanted a country style bedroom with cow bedding, my immediate response was “What kind”? The poor girl looked at me like I was out of my ever loving mind. I then launched my (all but) canned speech on how there is cow print bedding and then there was, well, cow print bedding. If she thought she was confused earlier in our conversation regarding her bedroom’s decor, she KNEW she was in deep water by this stage of the game.

I then explained to her without sounding the least bit condescending that there were cow print fabrics that were manufactured to look like a cow’s hide and then there were fabrics with pictures of cows printed on them.
As this girl was living on a ranch, I felt sure that she probably wanted the former rather than the latter but when it comes to decorating teen girls’ bedrooms you just never know so it is better to ask and be totally sure! I can only imagine what might have happened if I had assumed she wanted something cute and colorful rather than imitation cowhide. Well, she just might have had a cow!

I don’t know about you, but I prefer the girls cowgirl bedding sets that I use in my bedroom decorating projects to be easily identified as feminine. In other words, I don’t care for completely gender neutral horse theme bedding sets.

And, frankly, there have been times when one lone comforter in pink was the best I could come up with no matter how far and wide I cast my net. How sad it is that manufacturers apparently make the assumption that all ladies who ranch (compared to ladies who lunch) are tomboys that don’t mind coming home to a bedroom decorated in a cowboy theme rather than a pretty set of cowgirl bedding.

There’s a place for horseshoes, cowboy hats, boots and of course pictures of your favorite horse in the bedroom of a girl who loves to barrel race, farm or dreams of farming. But I have often wondered how could a little lace in addition to the leather possibly hurt? The horse loving girls that I know would not mind some white eyelet on the edge of their bandanas a bit. A hot pink bandana print bedding set with a white or cream eyelet bed skirt and curtains are what I have in mind for the next teenage girl’s bedroom who says she wants cowgirl bedding. If she balks and says that my cowgirl decorating ideas are too girly, you will be the first to know that I was wrong. Why am I so excited about decorating with horse print bedding sets? Do you really need to ask? Can you imagine a bed decorated with shams and pillows with pictures of horses in chocolate brown against a blue chambray or denim blue background? I think saddle blankets will be an excellent resource for decorating ideas for the window treatments and area rugs if I could just find a saddle blanket in blue to use for a custom window valance.


Your teenage daughter can dream of her next barrel race or equestrian competition with horses galloping around the bedskirt. All of the other sets of horse bedding for young girls that are in the market are categorized into horse print bedding sets that will appeal to rodeo loving cowgirls or English equestrian horse lovers. I can see lots of aged leather chaps, boots, saddles and cowboy hats used as wall decorations and tabletop displays in this room. I'm not so sure I can appreciate shades of brown, tan and beige for teenage girl's rooms, but the combination of dark brown with girly pink might be cute! If colors of horseshoes, cowboy hats and saddles are your taste, then I would definitely go with dark brown pillows and stuff with a worn leather look and skip city slicker fabrics like satin or silk.
