Film Scene I Love - The Comedians of Comedy
Zach Galifianakis talks about physical comedy from the film The Comedians of Comedy
Film Scene I Love - Zoolander
The gasoline fight in Zoolander. Any scene set to the pure pop delight that is Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go can't be bad.
Film Scene I Love - Singin' in the Rain
Gene Kelly's rain soaked song and dance from Singin' in the Rain. I took my mom to see this the other night on the big screen and it was a ton of fun. Gene Kelly was so handsome and his dancing was so athletic. I love his smile in this scene.
Film Scene I Love - Rebecca
Mrs. Danvers tries to coax Mrs. De Winter into jumping - from Hitchcock's Rebecca (the scene ends at 2:45 in)
Dame Judith Anderson is soooooo deliciously creepy in this scene.
Film Scene I Love - Red Dust
Jean Harlow and Clark Gable in Red Dust
Harlow and Gable are so great together. Especially when they are quarrelling. I love the bit at the end about her hair:
"Your hair always been that color?"
"Uh huh. Always been a towhead."
A towhead my foot! There's nothing natural about that platinum color!
Film Scene I Love - Breakfast at Tiffany's
The party scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's: classic, gorgeous, hysterical.
A Case of You
Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar
On the back of a carton coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet
Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
Love is touching souls
Surely you touched mine
Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Go to him, stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed
Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
This is absolutely my favorite Joni Mitchell song. I'm sure that is a claim made by many people as it's one of her most popular songs off what is definitely her most popular album, Blue. But a song this beautiful DESERVES to be at the top of everyone's favorites list. The lyrics are penetrating and confessional and the sentiment is so utterly romantic and heady. Joni sings so sweetly, hitting those incredible high notes that take the listener by surprise.
Have you ever seen the film Truly, Madly, Deeply? It's written and directed by the wonderful Anthony Minghella and stars the lovely Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman. Juliet is Nina, distraught over the death of her boyfriend Jamie. After many months of deep mourning, Jamie suddenly comes back to her as a ghost. There is a scene that takes place the morning after their reunion where they are looking out the window at the clouds in the sky and they sing a bit of Joni's A Case of You. It's adorable and comic, and oh so very romantic. You can see it here; it starts at about 7:37 minutes into this 10:00 minute clip. If you haven't seen this movie, I encourage you to do so.
Film Scene I Love - Rushmore
Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray in the revenge scene from Rushmore set to The Who's A Quick One While He's Away. I love when Max Fischer, in the waiter's uniform, takes his gum out of his mouth and sticks it to the wall.
Film Scene I Love - Wild at Heart
Nic Cage and Laura Dern in Wild at Heart
This is the Nic Cage I miss.
Film Scene I Love - Little Women
Beth getting a piano for Christmas in Little Women. I think Claire Danes is a tremendously good onscreen crier. She can make her chin tremble just so! This scene shows her skills splendidly. The scene I want to show starts at 4:18 and ends at 7:18.
Film Scene I Love - Annie Hall
Diane Keaton and Woody Allen in the lobster scene from Annie Hall
I adore Diane in this scene. Her reactions and facial expressions are so funny and I love that Annie has to grab her camera! Will Diane Keaton ever be anything OTHER than Annie? It's such an iconic role. . .
Film Scene I Love - The Outsiders
Diane Lane and C. Thomas Howell in The Outsiders. The scene I want to post starts at 1:18 in and ends at 3:45.
I love this short sunset scene in The Outsiders between Cherry Valance and Ponyboy Curtis. Diane Lane was so beautiful! It perfectly encompasses the strife between the Socs and the Greasers in just their little bit of dialogue.
Film Scene I Love - East of Eden
James Dean and Julie Harris in the carnival scene from East of Eden. Everyone always talks about James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause but I think this is his best role. I love how he listens to Abra talk on the Ferris Wheel. She is basically talking about how she sometimes thinks she'd like to be like the slutty girls that he goes out with, all the while not realizing that he doesn't want that, he wants Abra for her goodness. It's a great little scene that reveals so much of the characters. It makes me sad all over again to wonder what James Dean could have become if he hadn't died so young.
Film Scene I Love - Barefoot in the Park
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in the opening scene of Barefoot in the Park. These two are so gorgeous together it might hurt your eyes. And Jane as Corie is so feisty and sexy - and irrational! There are many fun scenes in this film, but the cute factor in this one cried out to be posted!
Film Scene I Love - The Philadelphia Story
Cary Grant, John Howard, James Stewart, and Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story. Katherine is so sexy in this scene, maybe the sexiest I've ever seen her. This is one of my comfort movies. Whenever I'm feeling down or sick or even when I just want to while away an afternoon I can pop this in and be perfectly content.
Film Scene I Love - Good Will Hunting
The other day I saw a commercial for Goldline.com which is simply a guy talking for like two minutes directly to the camera. The guy in the commercial was familiar, his voice especially. I knew that voice, I knew him. I could vaguely picture the guy in some movie where I knew he played a douche hitting on a girl. That was what came to me, but it took me about 20 minutes to place him. Then it hit me! He is the douchey, pony-tailed, college guy in the "How do you like them apples?" scene from Good Will Hunting! Great scene! I love when Casey Affleck says, "My boy is wicked smart!"
Film Scene I Love - It's a Wonderful Life
The phone call scene from It's a Wonderful Life. I saw this in the theater the other night, my first time getting to see it on the big screen. You can see how hard it is for them to be so close together, sharing the extension, they almost seem to hold their breaths. Then finally James Stewart breaks down and he's so passionate! The way he grabs her and shakes her, trying to convince himself as much as her that he doesn't want to get married, he wants to go on all the adventures he's always dreamed about. Ah, I love it.
Film Scene I Love - Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
The final scene of Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (AKA Amelie).
If you've never seen this film do not watch this because it's the ending, but get off your computer, put down your phone, and watch it immediately. I saw this film six times in the theater because it made me feel so good that whenever anyone told me they hadn't seen it I took them so they could experience the same feeling.
Film Scene I Love - A Room With a View
The entire picnic scene from A Room With a View featuring one of the best screen kisses of all time (in my humble opinion). I couldn't find a video of just the kiss, so if you want to watch the scene as I wanted to post it, skip ahead to 4:35 and watch only until 6:08. This is one of my favorite films of all time.
Film Scene I Love - A Place in the Sun
Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor in A Place in the Sun. These two are a textbook example of good chemistry. And they are so beautiful together you might just hurt yourself looking at them.
