This is absolutely my favorite Joni Mitchell song. I'm sure that is a claim made by many people as it's one of her most popular songs off what is definitely her most popular album, Blue. But a song this beautiful DESERVES to be at the top of everyone's favorites list. The lyrics are penetrating and confessional and the sentiment is so utterly romantic and heady. Joni sings so sweetly, hitting those incredible high notes that take the listener by surprise.
Have you ever seen the film Truly, Madly, Deeply? It's written and directed by the wonderful Anthony Minghella and stars the lovely Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman. Juliet is Nina, distraught over the death of her boyfriend Jamie. After many months of deep mourning, Jamie suddenly comes back to her as a ghost. There is a scene that takes place the morning after their reunion where they are looking out the window at the clouds in the sky and they sing a bit of Joni's A Case of You. It's adorable and comic, and oh so very romantic. You can see it here; it starts at about 7:37 minutes into this 10:00 minute clip. If you haven't seen this movie, I encourage you to do so.

1. What makes you write?
I write because I can't shut up.
2. Who is the greatest unknown influence on your music?
My Grandma Donna.
3. What is your most closeted, secret, guilty and humiliating musical pleasure?
Justin Timberlake. He's on my ipod. Right. Now. The thing that's embarrassing about that is that I'm just getting excited about pop songs that were popular 5 years ago. Have you heard that Bringing Sexy Back, song? It's awesome. Oh, you heard it 5 years ago? Great. When discussing pop culture with me, you should assume that I'm aware of about as much as your oldest and least cool Aunt. Probably less.
4. What established artist made you want to write songs, and why? I genuinely wanted to be Dolly Parton when I grew up. Let's face it. I still do. When I learned she wrote her songs and actually wrote songs that other people sang, too, it awed me. I wanted to be like her, so I practiced writing songs. My first song was called "I Want To Fly Forever." I wrote it in the 3rd grade. I will never ever show that song to Dolly Parton.
5. Advice for just-starting songwriters on establishing yourself as a woman in the industry? I am not established in the industry, so I could actually use some advice, myself.
6. Why country? Townes Van Zandt said it the best: Three chords and the truth.
7. Favorite backwoods expression. My Grandma used to say, "Now, isn't that as common as an old brown shoe?" I need to work that into a song.

Dwight Freeny's Ankle Injury
One of the big stories leading up to the Super Bowl this weekend is the status of Dwight Freeny's ankle. Freeny, a defensive end, is one of the best players in the NFL. The media is not giving a very accurate description of Freeny's injury, calling it a "lower" ankle sprain, or "basketball" ankle sprain, so I thought I would try to help out. From watching the video of the injury, Freeny jumped up in the air, and his right foot lands on the foot of Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. This forced his ankle into excessive inversion (pointing the bottom of the foot in) and plantar flexion (pointing the bottom of the foot down). This mechanism of injury will sprain the lateral ligaments of the ankle, which include the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL), and the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). The lateral ankle sprain is the most common type of ankle sprain, accounting for about 85% of all ankle sprains. The media is also reporting that Freeny has a Grade III ligament sprain. A grade III sprain indicates a complete rupture of the ligament or ligaments. This would cause a great deal of pain and instability of the lateral ankle, making it difficult for him to push off and change directions. It typically takes several weeks or months to return from a grade III sprain, and may require surgery. I'm sure the Colts athletic trainers and doctors will be working with Freeny around the clock so that he can play Sunday, but I would say if the reports of the extent of his injury is true, he will have a hard time getting on the field.
